INTERSTELLAR

Mankind was born on Earth. It was never meant to die here.

Director: Christopher Nolan

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

Duration: 169 minutes

Plot: a team of explorers travel through a wormhole in space in an perilous attempt to ensure humanity's survival.

Analysis: Christopher Nolan is by far my favorite director. That being said, i will try my best to remain objective while critisizing this movie. Interstellar is a typical Nolan's film. A film crafted by solid performances, intense music and breath-taking action scenes. But, mainly, a film where everything or, at least, almost everything is given through a completely realistic prism. Although we are talking about space travels, wormholes and strange planets, you won't feel like watching a science fiction movie rather than a scientific documentary (after all the scenario is based on the theory of Caltech's famous physicist Kip Thorne). Even the incredible visual effects of the film (awarded with the respective oscar) have been designed in an absolutely realistic way. If you are expecting to see scary alien monsters devouring the astronauts you will be greatly dissapointed, since the only "enemies" are huge waves, icy mountains and gravitaniotal pulls.
However, nothing is more intemidating than Nolan's "monsters" and, at the same time, nothing is more impressive than his incomparable ability to match his magnificent action scenes with modest though deep and honest humane sentiments and emotions. In other words, the chances of sheding a tear are far greater while watching one of Nolan's sci-fi masterpieces rather than a heart-breaking, romantic story.

Things to notice:
  • the brilliant cast (which numbers five oscar awards and four oscar nominations),
  • Christopher Nolan's flawless direction and
  • the docking scene.

Oscar awards (2015):

  • one (1) oscar win forBest Achievement in Visual Effects.
  •
  • four (4) oscar nominations for:

a) Best Achievement in Music/Original Score,
b) Best Achievement in Sound Mixing,
c) Best Achievement in Sound Editing and
d) Best Achievement in Production Desing.

Evaluation: 9.4/10
