THERE WILL BE BLOOD

When faith meets ambition.

Actors: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Ciaran Hinds and others

Genre: Drama, History

Duration: 158 minutes

Plot: a story of family, religion, hatred, oil and madness, focusing on a turn-of-the-century prospector, in the early days of the business.

Analysis: there are some movies which attract the audience's interest mainly due to the participation of a special actor or actress in their cast and not so much for the quality of the movie itself. There Will Be Blood is such an example, since the first thing that will pop into anyone's mind while hearing the film's title will be a certain name: Daniel Day-Lewis. And yes, it is quite logical to think about the greatest actor of our time, the only one to have ever won three oscar awards for Best Performance in a Leading Role, a true acting chameleon who can easily disguise himself into a paralyzed painter, a brave indian warrior, a young rebel or even a pioneer president of the United States. And yes, the undeniable truth is that Daniel Day-Lewis is once again magnificent in his role as a cruel oil prospector, managing to captivate the attention and rightfully win his second oscar and our hearty applause.
Nevertheless, the film itself isn't bad at all. Director Paul Thomas Anderson creates an excellent depiction of the late 19th century. The scenaries are quite picturesque and the power of the film's photography is imposing, making you feel the taste of the oil and dirt in the tip of your tongue. What's more the dialogues are exceptional, reminding us of authentic conversations of that era. All in all, There Will Be Blood is a notable movie, worthy to be watched not only for the participation of a enormous star in it but also for its indisputable quality.

Things to notice:

  • the vintage direction of Paul Thomas Anderson,
  • the first dialogue that appears almost fifteen minutes after the beggining of the movie and
  • do i really have to mention Daniel Day-Lewis's marvelous performance?

Oscar awards (2008):

  • two (2) oscar wins for
a) Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role and
b) Best Achievement in Cinematography.

  • six (6) oscar nominations for
a) Best Motion Picture of the Year,
