ZODIAC

There's more than one way to lose your life to a killer.

Director: David Fincher

Genre: Crime, Drama, History

Duration: 157 minutes

Plot: a San Francisco cartoonist becomes an amateur detective obsessed with tracking down the Zodiac killer.

Analysis: adapting a real story into a Hollywood's million dollars film screenplay is always a touch challenge that rarely brings decent results. Zodiac is a bright exemption to that common law, proving to us that even a complicated and perhaps boring matter (such as the countless investigations helded by the police authorities of San Francisco in the late '60s in their fruitless efforts to discover the true indentity of the serial killer known by the alias of "Zodiac") can be transformed into something exhilarating and interesting. The architect behind the film's success is its director David Fincher, who is trully charismatic in creating movies that are being built up upon the sketching of a killer's persona (e.g. Se7enThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl).
In Zodiac, Fincher offers us once again the atmospheric sensation he is so famous about, making us hold our breath while expecting the most peculiar event from even the most plain scene. The depiction of San Francisco the late '60s is excellent and so is the selection of the main actors, with each and every one of them landing a solid performance. And even though the film's duration is quite long and its subject demanding, the viewer won't feel tired for a single second since Fincher manages to narate the story with a relaxing yet watchfulness simplicity which undeniably captivates the viewer's attention. After all, trying to find the answer to a riddle that remains unsolved for almost half a century seems like an irresistable bait to me, don't you agree folks?

Things to notice:

  • David Fincher's atmospheric direction,
  • the excellent performances of the three leading stars and
  • the undiminished suspense, created by the well-orchestrated script and the pointy lines (this is the Zodiac speaking...).

Oscar awards (2008): - (!!!)

Evaluation: 9.2/10

Should be watched tonight if: you think you can actually discover who the hell "Zodiac" really was.
