MELANCHOLIA

It will change everything.

Director: Lars von Trier

Actors: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland and others

Genre: Drama, Sci-Fi

Duration: 130 minutes

Plot: two sisters find their already strained relationship challenged as a mysterious new planet threatens to collide with Earth.

Analysis: trying to be as unambiguous as i may be i have to admit that i am not blown away in the sound of Lars von Trier's name. In my humble opinion he is too eccentric and many of his films are pretentious and provocative that Nymphomaniac duology was a real eyeshore, which used its title only to intrigued the audience.
That being said, i found Melancholia to be a spectacular movie, where the societal drama and the science fiction are joined in harmony. The film is divided into two equal parts and even though someone would expect the first part to be quite boring as it actually describes a wedding– he would be surprised to find out that in fact it is extremely interesting. Trier's direction is spectacular, upgrading even the most humble and plain scene, thus keeping your interest undiminished. The dialogues and the performances are keen and pointy, having the necessary "dark" element which adds the essence of melancholy to the whole film's atmosphere, while the finale is simply breathtaking. To sum up Melancholia is a movie which will surely surprises you, as it is gradually transforming into something you would not expect from the start, leading you into the innermost paths of human's soul.

Things to notice:

  • the melancholic atmosphere created by Trier's brilliant direction,
  • Kirsten Dunst's naked scene (thumbs up for her reinforced bosom) and
  • the intense finale.
